I have to admit, I’m not the biggest fan of Valentine’s
Day. I know, I know…I’m an innkeeper and
should be touting the romantic holiday for all it’s worth. Don’t get me wrong – I think romance is very
important, but shouldn’t romance be spread throughout the year regardless of
what the calendar says? Still, I suppose
if it takes a recognized holiday to put a little spice in your relationship, I’m
all for it. So, without further ado,
here is my idea of the perfect Valentine’s Day (or any day you wish to
celebrate your love):

Kick the day off with breakfast in bed. If you happen to be staying at the CaptainsHouse Inn, we offer complimentary room service so all you really have to do is
book a room and tell us what you want brought over. If you’re on your own, I’d suggest heart
shaped pancakes if your partner has a sweet tooth or sunny side up egg hearts
for the savory diner. Either way, heart
shaped melon kabobs are a creative, yet relatively easy way to add some fruit
and color to the breakfast tray. You can
find examples of all these dishes on our Valentines Ideas Pinterest page. Don’t forget coffee or tea and juice. And a bud vase with a red rose would be a
nice touch.

During the day, your itinerary should reflect your partner’s
interests. If you’re here in Chatham,
consider a walk along Lighthouse Beach followed by a stroll down Main Street,
perhaps grabbing a bite at the Impudent Oyster, one of my personal favorite lunch
spots. Or, maybe a movie marathon in
your cozy guest room with room service lunch followed by a long soak in your
whirlpool tub is more your speed.
Regardless of what you do, there should be chocolate involved. Whether it’s a decadent piece of cake at our
cream tea or a box of truffles to sample with a glass of bubbly, chocolate is
key to your perfect Valentine’s Day.

Dinner time! Whether
you have culinary ability or not, consider a candlelit dinner at home. You can cook a favorite meal or order from a
favorite take-in joint. Either way,
presentation is everything. Soft music
and a beautifully laid out table can make even a pizza and salad look
elegant. Check out the “Love” placesetting on our Pinterest page. If you’re
staying with us, Buca’s or Fin Seafood would be my top choices. Buca’s is like a little piece of Northern Italy
tucked away on route 28 in Harwich, just 10 minutes from the inn. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu –
we can’t seem to go without ordering their signature salami bruschetta. And save room for one of their homemade
desserts, the profiteroles, especially, are a standout. At Fin, local seafood dishes are the
highlights of the menu, all prepared using locally sourced ingredients. With an upstairs and downstairs dining area
and cozy bar, the setting is intimate and the food and service unmatched.

End the day by surprising your partner with a single rose on
the bed and a card expressing your love is always a nice touch. February 14th is Valentine’s Day
according to the calendar. But really, a
day of spoiling that special person in your life should happen not once a year,
but once a month…at least! No matter
what the calendar says, we, at the Captains House Inn, are always happy to help
make your day of romance extra special.
